Happy Friday and welcome back! I absolutely love the weekend (could have something to do with a certain someones ~cough~ my ~cough~ birthday). Today I’m going to go over an elevator pitch. An elevator pitch is a short, memorable description of what you do or what you sell. Your goal here is to get a second conversation with this person her have them asking for more information. You want to grasp the persons attention. An elevator pitch is about 30 seconds in length at maximum. It’s almost like answering the question, what do you do? You want your words to be digestible, so you would stay away from the specifics because it drags the conversation. As part of my examples I will be using my very own elevator pitch which you can find on my home page.
You want to start by introducing yourself. Write a sentence about who you are and what you do (or what role you may have at your company)
- Hi my name is Lauren Morris and I am a script writer at Lauren Morris Productions.
This is brief and to the point. I identified myself, my role, and where I work. We can get very comfortable when we are talking about ourselves and we can end up rambling. Which, is not something you want to do in an elevator pitch.
Next you’re going to state your companies mission. You should have a clear understanding of what your company does. If you don’t know you should probably rethink the field you’re in. The more you know about your company, the easier it’ll be to have a comfortable conversation with this person instead of sounding like you’re trying to remember what you’re saying.
- We have produced scripts for movies that are sown across the U.S attracting the attention of many well known directors such as Stan Lee, Michael Bay, and Spike Lee.
This shows just a bit of my knowledge into my company by having the ability to cite off the directors we’ve worked with.
Now you’re going to explain the company value proposition. This is what you provide to your customers, what sets you apart from others in your field.
- We just enjoy giving people the opportunity to escape from reality through a good story.
This is short and sweet. It may be simple but it shows the mission we have for our customers.
Now for a longer elevator pitch this would be the part you would grab the persons attention with a hook. This is when you may tell a funny story about the company and the people who work there, or an inspirational story as to why you got involved, or even an exciting moment with a customer. This is usually the part of the inspirational speech where the person talks about their mom who was a teacher and how she inspired them to want to help people so now they work in health care.
