College Football Playoff Controversy

Ever since 2014, The NCAA has implemented a new college football playoff system in which four teams battle it out for a chance of being the national champions. Prior to the year 2014, the top two teams in the nation would play as opposed to four. This sparked a lot of controversy between the fans and teams with the NCAA being that it would be more competitive with more teams. And teams who had a record that should have been considered for a chance to play for a national championship were unable to qualify based on numerous implications. So, I am here to give my opinion on how the college football playoffs should be structured and what factors should be taken into consideration to qualify. I also will discuss the four teams that were selected this year and if they really deserved it.

Every year since 2014, fans of certain college teams are devastated to find out that their team didn’t qualify for the college football playoffs. And although a majority of winning teams qualify for a bowl game, it’s not the same feeling as playing for a national championship. Despite being only six years old, the college football system is getting a bit boring and predictable as the same powerhouse teams such as Ohio State and Clemson make an appearance every year. Sports fans love to root for the underdog, which is why they eagerly want to see new teams qualify for the playoffs. And based on my past experience and personal opinion with college football, I believe there should be more implications implemented to make the college football playoffs more interesting.

There are a few possible solutions that I think the NCAA should consider making the college football playoffs more interesting to keep the fans satisfied and intrigued. One solution could be expanding the college football playoffs to eight teams as opposed to only four. This not only adds more games, but it also allows more teams to make it which sparks more competition. This will also enhance the ratings of college football being that more fan bases will watch their teams on the national stage. I believe they should also base the playoffs off of the strength of schedule as opposed to the overall record. Some teams like Ohio State played weak competition yet made it based on their record. And I believe that a team should make it in if they have beaten and played against tougher competition as opposed to a team who had a cake-walk of a schedule and was able to go 12-0.

My recommendations correlate a lot with my solutions in the sense that they should expand the college football playoffs to more teams. This year, Notre Dame, Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State were granted spots in the playoffs. There is a huge difference in talent within these four teams, which is why fans are not as interested in watching this years based on the lop-sided games being potential blowouts. Teams also played significantly fewer games this year based on covid which should be taken into consideration. I recommend that the college football playoff committee should restructure the seeding of teams. If more even and balanced teams are able to play in the semifinal, then the games will be a lot more interesting.

I encourage all of my college football fans to comment and provide me with your thoughts on how the NCAA should structure the college football playoffs. This topic has been highly debated for the last six years, and I am very curious to hear what you guys have to say. I leave my viewers with a few questions: How many teams should be eligible to play for the college football playoffs? Do you believe Notre Dame and Ohio State deserve to play in this year’s playoffs? Should record or strength of schedule be the main indicator of if a team should qualify?

Ask any questions you guys may have based upon the college football playoffs. I love hearing what you guys are concerned or curious about.
