In order for a football team in the NFL to prosper and succeed, all units of their organization need to excel at their job. This starts with the owner and goes down the line towards the general manager, coaches, and trainers. But at the end of the day, the players dictate whether or not an organization is successful or not being that they are the ones who perform. Now all 22 positions on an NFL team are crucial in ensuring that team can succeed, but there are a few positions that are above the rest and are extremely important in being a successful team. Today, I am here to give you guys my top 3 most important positions on an NFL football team.
Above all, the quarterback is typically regarded as the most important position in football. Their job is to ultimately lead the entire offense and make any adjustments or audibles depending on situations necessary. they have the ball in their hands every single play so ultimately, possession is entirely dependent on their decision-making. And being that the game has shifted towards a mostly pass-heavy league, then the quarterback is relied on to make plays with his arm. If the offense is unable to score a good amount of points, then it ultimately falls back on the quarterback’s poor performance. Quarterbacks who are highly acknowledged in the NFL include Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Drew Brees and etc.
This next position I am talking about doesn’t nearly receive as much credit as they deserve but is still so important for a team’s success. This position is Left Tackle and these players serve as the leaders of the entire offensive line. Now they may not get the publicity or recognition from the media, but they discretely determine whether or not the offense is running smoothly. Being that 95% of quarterbacks are right-handed throwers, left tackles are responsible for blocking their blind side where they are most vulnerable to not seeing a defender. Left tackles not only block huge defensive ends and lineman, but they are primarily responsible for not letting the quarterback gets sacked or fumble the ball to result in a turnover. they typically have no help or assistance, so they usually have to go one-on-one with some of the best athletes on the field. It is a huge responsibility and can determine whether or not a team can score points.
The final most crucial position is one that has a huge responsibility and usually lines up against the left tackle, this position is the right defensive end. These players are typically one of the biggest and most disruptive players on any given team. They are fully responsible for getting pressure on the quarterback and stopping the running back from getting outside. They typically are getting double-teamed as well, which makes it very difficult to get through and disrupt the opposing team’s offense. They need to be able to consistently get pressure on the quarterback to prevent the quarterback from having too much time in the pocket and being able to easily target and identify receivers. their timing is absolutely crucial to be able to get past the offensive line and make it hard for the opposing team to generate any sort of offense. These players usually serve as leaders of the defense, and they need to be able to call out any adjustments or schemes that they recognize by the offense and relay it back to their teammates. A few defensive linemen that have replicated this description of an interior defensive end include JJ Watt, TJ Watt, and Von Miller.
Those are just some of the highlighted positions on any NFL team that have the biggest responsibilities. My recommendation to the management of all teams is to prioritize getting solid candidates at all 3 of the positions I named. This will make it a lot easier to generate points for your offense and eventually win games. And it will help your defense gain leadership and disruptive playmakers. The NFL is a cruel business in which if you can’t help the team generate wins then you are usually cut or traded. And getting these positions right will make it a lot easier for an organization.
Be sure to comment if you would like to voice your own opinion on your guy’s takes. I would love to hear what you guys have to say about the importance of positions in the NFL. All positions in the NFL are important, but these stand out the most. I leave my viewers with a few questions to take into consideration: What position do you believe is the most important for a team’s success? Do all positions have equal value on a team? Should players be paid more if they play a more important position?
Make sure to leave any questions or concerns you guys may have on this debatable topic. I always loved comparing positions on any NFL team, and I would love to hear the questions you guys may have on how this importance correlates to success for a team.
