Every year following the end of the regular season, the NFL gives away a number of awards for players who are well deserving of these. The awards include offensive/defensive player of the year, Comeback player of the year, Offensive/defensive rookie of the year, Coach of the year, and finally MVP. Receiving these awards is a huge honor, and really can enhance a player or coach’s overall respectability amongst the league. Although the awards haven’t been officially announced yet, I thought I would give you guys my predictions on who I believe will win these awards. So with that being said, I am going to predict my award winners and how I believe the selection process should go.
Let’s go ahead and start with the Offensive and Defensive Players of the year being that these always seem to be the most controversial. For offensive, I have Stephon Diggs who is a wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills. Diggs was arguably the best receiver in the entire league this year leading the league in receptions (127) and yards (1535). His production for his team is remarkable as the Bills finished second in their entire conference. For defensive, I have defensive end TJ Watt of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Watt was absolutely remarkable this year on one of the best defenses in the league-leading the league in sacks (15). Even when he didn’t make a play, the impact he had on opposing offenses was astonishing.
Although they are young and inexperienced, a lot of rookies really impacted the game in a positive way. So with that being said, let’s give our offensive/defensive rookie of the year prediction. For offensive. I have Minnesota Vikings wide receiver, Justin Jefferson. Despite his team not having too much success, Jefferson broke numerous rookie records this season. He finished this season with 1400 yards which is a new NFL record and was one of the only bright spots on a bad team. Breaking a record should guarantee he earns the award, and I cant wait to see his future success in the league. For defensive, I have Chase Young who is a defensive end for the Washington Football Team. This pick was fairly obvious based on his stats and his disruptive nature. He tallied 8.5 sacks and a touchdown this season and is already the best player on his team. There is no doubt in my mind that he will have a very successful career.
Possibly one of the most deserving and accomplishing awards, the comeback player awards is one that really is well deserved from a player that significantly enhanced their performance on the field. For my winner, this man overcame the unthinkable and was able to defy all odds against him and turn adversity into success. My comeback player of the year has to be Alex Smith, quarterback of the Washington Football Team. Smith suffered a broken leg in 2017 and was expected to never play the sport again after being hospitalized for almost a year. But he was determined to get on the field again and eventually was able to start for the Washington Football Team by week 8 of the season. Alex was able to throw for 6 touchdowns and granted his team a spot in the playoffs. And his determination is truly inspiring. Now for coach of the year, this is an award for a man who completely changed the culture of a franchise and made them succeed despite the odds against him. And for coach of the year, I have Kevin Stefanski of the Cleveland Browns. The Browns have been the laughing stock of the league, having not made the playoffs since 2002. But Stefanski completely changed the culture behind the program and was able to have the Browns finish 10-6 while making the playoffs. This award should be pretty obvious.
And finally, we are going to be talking about the most important and distinguished award for any NFL player. This award essentially crowns you as the best player in the league which is the MVP. And for MVP, I believe it will be the quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, Aaron Rodgers. Despite being 37 years old, Aaron Rodgers had an unforgettable season, leading the Packers to the first seed in the NFC playoffs. Rodgers completed the season with over 4,00 yards, 48 touchdowns, and only 5 interceptions which is unbelievable. He did all of this with a fairly weak supporting cast despite wide receiver Devante Adams. Usually, players tend to regress as they get older, but Rodgers is actually improving. I see no reason as to why he wouldn’t win this award.
As always, make sure to comment on this post as I’m sure many of you will have your own opinions regarding this topic. The awards come out pretty soon, so I can’t wait to see what you guys predict. I will leave you guys with a few questions: What is taken into consideration when picking the representative for these awards? Do you believe there should be more/fewer awards?
