More often than not, there will be a structure set in place as a guide for every major that showcases which classes need to be taken first in order to further your journey within the major course of your choosing.  Depending on which degree or certification you are pursuing, you may be taking a lot of elective courses during the early stages of your college experience.  These classes are great for adjusting to the new environment you have just recently inhabited, college.

In addition to having a written guideline to help you pick courses that will benefit your major, most colleges often offer and or require, each student be assigned to an advisor.  This advisor is usually part of the department from which your major comes from so they may also be a professor of yours one day!!  They help you choose courses in an order that sets you up to graduate on time with all of the required classes completed.
