This feels like a great time to share an important tip for the application process when applying for video roles, or creative roles alike.

The best piece of advice I can give you for jobs that want to see a demo reel, or a portfolio is to lead with your best work.

Your website should bring the viewer directly to your best. Don’t have it land on splash page to enter your site, don’t link it to your “about me” page, don’t have it be your gondola or socials directory. Have it be the piece of work that you think best exemplifies your talent level and skillset. Maybe it’s your demo reel, maybe it’s your most recent peice of work. Either way, it should be a singular example.

Think of it this way… if you bring the hiring manager to a page that has 15+ videos, you’re letting them choose your talent level for the job. They may pick a video (or piece of content) that seems interesting to them but was actually something you made 8 years ago. That is what they may judge you on.

Have the control by leading with your best work.
