Chapter 7: The Empress of the Blues

As Danny Barker description Bessie Smith sounds like she was definitely a crowd-pleaser. I think it is cool that she incorporated the church into her performance and that people loved her the way she was. Also I thought it was interesting that Buster Bailey described her as a rough woman. She was described as singing nothing too fast which I believe would be harder to keep peoples attention with the slower pace. Lastly, the way that she didn’t even have to rehearse is actually amazing and I believe that would be so much harder to perform, but somehow she made it work.
