The communications field is essentially one giant group project. With every piece of media created, there is almost always more than one person who helped develop it. This realization is kind of ironic to me because of how often I hear people in my field (or people in general) complain about working in groups.
Group work is unavoidable in this field. A project could take 1/4 the amount of time to complete with a team of people rather than one person. If the word got out at your workplace that you hate group work, how many people do you think are going to want to work with you in return? It’s going to be difficult to join a company while simultaneously refusing to collaborate with your co-workers.
Now that we know it’s unavoidable, maybe there are ways to keep group work to a minimum in this field.
– Work on post production like editing audio or video. You’ll still be working with one or two other people but that beats the entire production set with talent, the crew and more.
– Become a freelance artist. Money isn’t consistent but no one can interfere while you’re creating a project for an employer.
– Ask your employer to group you with people you work the best with. This way you are not avoiding group work and at the same time are practicing your group working skills.
If you hate group work that much, I’d say become a freelance artist. Asking your employer to put you with specific people won’t look great on your character and honestly, you can’t hide in post-production. I don’t have personal experience with avoiding group work. Have you ever taken measures to avoid group work?
