Summer 2013 – IUP Biology Study Abroad in South Africa

This message is to let you know that on Thursday,
October 25 the Biology and English Departments will present an information
session on the planned Summer, 2013 study abroad travel class in southern
Africa. The information session will consist of a short slide presentation by
Dr. Carl Luciano (Biology) followed by an opportunity for Q&A with Dr.
Luciano and Dr. Adrian Wisnicki (English). The information session will be held
in Room 6 Weyandt Hall at 7:30 PM. Anyone who is interested in the study abroad
travel (students, faculty, family, friends) is invited to attend.

The proposed study abroad travel class will include
about three weeks in late July and early August 2013 (exact dates dependent on
summer schedule and on availability of accommodations). We plan to visit
national/provincial parks, wildlife reserves and a private game ranch to learn
about the biology as well as the business of wildlife in the Republic of South
Africa and the Kingdom of Swaziland. We will also give significant attention to
the culture, history, and literature of the areas we visit. Our proposed
itinerary includes Johannesburg, Kruger National park, Hlane Royal National
Park, and various sites in Limpopo Province. We also plan to visit the fynbos
region around the Cape Peninsula along with cultural activities in and around
Cape Town-South Africa’s “Mother City”.
