Spanning 13,000 islands and a great diversity of
people, Indonesia hosts a fascinating array of dynamic art forms. The IUP
Indonesian Cultural Arts Day will celebrate the unique cultural arts of
Indonesia on Saturday, October 27 with displays featuring arts from different
regions of Indonesia, workshop opportunities to learn Indonesian music and
dance, and an evening performance highlighting different styles of music and
dance from Indonesia. These events are the culmination of the IUP
International Week as well as featured events of the IUP Family Weekend.
Throughout the day, an Indonesian Cultural Arts
Exhibition will provide displays of Indonesian arts and crafts from 9:30 am to
5 pm in the Ohio Room in the HUB. During the afternoon, all are welcome
to experience Indonesian music and dance first hand in two workshops from 3:30
– 5 pm. In the Ohio Room in the HUB, the director of the Washington DC
Anklung ensemble will teach participants how to play traditional bamboo
instruments. Those interested in dance can join the Balinese dance
workshop in Cogswell Hall, Room 126. No prior experience is needed to
participate in the workshops.
The evening Indonesian Cultural Arts program at 7
pm in Gorell Hall will present traditional and popular Indonesian music and
dance. Featured guest performers and ensembles include the Kolaborasi
Gamelan Jawa (Javanese instrumental ensemble) and Calung (a bamboo instrumental
ensemble) from the Pittsburgh area, Balinese dancers and the Anklung ensemble
(another style of bamboo instrument ensemble) from Washington DC, and Sundanese
(Western Java) musical styles performed by Indra Ridwan, faculty member of the Indonesian
College of Arts, Bandung and at Pasundan University
in Bandung, Indonesia. In addition, IUP music faculty members Drs.
Chepaitis and Jennings will perform with the Kolaborasi Gamelan Jawa
ensemble. The program will conclude with a performance of Dandung, a
popular style of music, with a chance for audience members to get up and dance.
All events are free and open to the public.
Attendance vouchers will be available for students for the workshops and
evening program. Recital attendance will be available for music students.
