Provost’s Fall Essay Contest for Common Freshman Reader

September 17th is the deadline to submit entries to the Provost’s Fall Essay Contest for the Common Freshman Reader: Nickel and Dimed.

The fall essay contest is becoming an annual staple attracting submissions by the hundreds from IUP students.

Despite being the Common FreshmanReader, the Provost’s Fall Essay Contest routinely attracts submissions from upperclassmen, as well.

For this fall’s essay, Provost Intemann raises to students the following question:

Reflect on your experiences this past summer as you were preparing to start college, shopping for school, stopping for fast food, or saying good-bye to your minimum wage job. Describe how the book impacted your thinking about minimum wage earners. As you write your essay, keep in mind that IUP graduates usually have more opportunities than the minimum wage earners described by the author in Nickel and Dimed.

Provost Intemann welcomes responses from all students. Essays need to be 3-4 pages in length and submitted as a Microsoft Word document. Submissions can be sent to CFR-essay@iup.edu by September 17, 2010.
