Teaching Literacy

  • What are 3 of your fundamental beliefs about learning literacy?

  1. We believe that the power of learning is within ourselves.
  2. We believe that our external factors are only stimulus something like/ some sort of stimulus. For example, a child who has the power to acquire the first language will acquire it automatically.
  3. We believe that through practice and repetition, we can change and develop our literacy skills.

What are 3 of your fundamental beliefs about teaching literacy?

  1. We believe that the teacher possesses the power of creating stimulus for teaching literacy.
  2. We believe that none can be taught unless the students does have the power of reception.
  3. As teachers,  we can create much better environment for teaching literacy. As teachers we can train ourselves to provide with the students with better stimuli.

What are 3 of your fundamental beliefs about teaching literacy?

  1. The goal should be, in a digital age, to create more appropriate context so that students can have the opportunity to learn the technique to self-judge, self-improve, self-modify and control.
  2. To make the world a better place to live in. for example with nuclear power the world can be destroyed or can be developed.
  3. The third goal should be to train ourselves how we can be more helpful to our surrounding people and manifest the human excellence.

What should be your basic approach to teaching literacy? What role should technology have in that teaching approach?

  • Humanistic approach.
  • Technology should have a very positive role in this teaching approach.

My Technology History

I was born in a remote village of Bangladesh which is a developing country where the technological advancement is still not at its highest. Though it might sound unbelievable, the first time I saw a computer was in my school in my sixth grade. Our school bought two computers and our class teacher took us to the Office to show it. With a great wonder, I was looking at those computers without knowing the fact that these machines will be a part and parcel of my life. Our teacher showed us how the computer could print a written document. To me it seemed like a magic.

Anyway. after completing my tenth grade, I went to visit my youngest uncle’s house where there was a telephone (analogue) set. That was the first time I saw a telephone set from a very close distance. While staying there, once I I received a call and to my utter surprise, I discovered that I could listen to someone’s voice who is far from me. It astonished me that he was listening to me and answering my questions. I was taken aback.

When I completed my 12th grade and moved to the capital for going to College, I moved into a small apartment with some other students one of who had a cell phone. I used to write letters to my mother and father. However since my roommate had a cell phone, I gave his number to my parents so that they could call me in an emergency situation because letters used to take a long time to reach. I was thinking to buy a cell phone but it was pretty expensive for me at that time. So, I started to save some money with a view to purchasing a cell phone. Then one I and my friend went to buy a cell phone and bought a “Samsung” mobile set  which was only for talking and sending text messages. The mobile set did not have any more options like using the internet but I was extremely happy to have a cell phone of my own. It was like a dream come true for me. I was filled with joy that I have a mobile set which was sign of rich people in my country at that time. Having a mobile set gave me sense of superiority because not many people had mobile set in those days.

While doing my MA in ELT (English Language Teaching), our teacher told us to submit assignments which should be typed in computer and printed on pages. Till then, I did not have a computer. So, I was in need of buying one. Again, as a student, it was expensive for me at that time. However, my elder brother named Mridul Maharaj came forward to extend a helping hand towards me. With his monetary help, I was able to buy a computer. When it was brought to my place, I had a feeling of joy and ownership. I was very excited a have a computer of my own. Then, I could tell my friends that I have a computer. Of course, the computer came a great use for my study.

Now, I have a smart phone and  Macbook but the joy that I had after buying those for the first time long ago back home is still incomparable.

Going Tech Free

I could not help using the technology though I decided not to use. Technology has become part and parcel of our present life and controls a lot of things directly and indirectly. My story is as follows:

I thought of going tech free on the last Saturday (Sep 25. 2016). So, on the Friday (Sep 24, 2016) night, I was planning for for Saturday and before going to sleep, I went to set the alarm on my clock. As soon as I went to set the alarm, I discovered the fact that I was using technology. Anyway, I got up from the bed with the help of the alarm clock and decided not to use anymore technology on that day. However, suddenly in the morning the blind of our window broke down and was not closing properly. So, I had to call the emergency maintenance service of the apartment though I decided not to use the cell phone. I also thought of not using the computer on that day. However, on my mobile screen, I saw that my GA Professor- Dr. Resa Bizzaro had sent me an urgent email asking me meet her. I had to reply to her email to confirm that I have received her email and I would like to meet her on time. So, I had to use my laptop to send her the email. I also thought of not using my bike on that day as I thought bike is also a technology. But all on a sudden I had to go out for a quick shopping in the Martin and in order to save the time I had to use my bike. Therefore, it was not at all possible for me to go tech free even for a few hours let alone a full day. So, I find that Marshall McLuhan is right on his point that we have become dependent on the use of technology in our every day life in this modern era.
