Presentation Lyrics

“Sunday Morning” by No Doubt

[Verse 1]
Sappy pathetic little me
That was the girl I used to be
You had me on my knees

I’d trade you places any day
I’d never thought you could be that way
But you looked like me on Sunday

[Chorus]
You came in with the breeze
On Sunday Morning
You sure have changed since yesterday
Without any warning

I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you well, so well

[Verse 2]
You’re trying my shoes on for a change
They look so good but fit so strange
Out of fashion so I can complain

[Chorus]
You came in with the breeze
On Sunday Morning
You sure have changed since yesterday
Without any warning

I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you
I thought I knew you well, so well

[Bridge]
I know who I am, but who are you
You’re not looking like you used to
You’re on the other side of the mirror
So nothing’s looking quite as clear
Thank you, for turning on the light
Thank you, now you’re the parasite
I didn’t think you had it in you
And now, you’re looking like I used to

[Chorus]
You came in with the breeze
On Sunday Morning
You sure have changed since yesterday
Without any warning
And you want me badly
Cause you cannot have me

I thought I knew you
Now I’ve got a new view
I thought I knew you well, oh well

[Outro]
Ooh, on Sunday morning
Without a warning
Sunday morning
Want me badly
Cannot have me
Sunday morning

Throwbacks

This past week I have been going back in time to my middle school days and listening to the music I used to listen to back then. The other night I had my Youtube videos on autoplay and I heard the beginning to “Fat Lip” by Sum41 come on and I got so excited because it had been a while since I actually listened to and enjoyed this song. From there, I heard a lot of songs from Good Charlotte, Blink182, and then Avril Lavigne and No Doubt. In my first blog post, I had written about skate punk and how it has evolved into many different forms of punk. I hadn’t thought about it since then. But, as I was researching for my presentation for this class, I started to realize how many subgenres of punk there actually was. My song is by the band No Doubt, and I dove back into the endless Wikipedia pages of the various genres that No Doubt covers. There’s ska-punk, new wave, two-tone, ska-rock, reggae rock, punk-core, ska-core and many many more. All of these have a similar thread, but can also sound completely different. Also: I realized that I have always been a fan of ska music! I have been listening to Sublime for as long as I can remember, thanks to my dad. Ska has become a new “obsession” of mine. Attached to this post is one of my favorite ska songs! (Watch the video, it’s amazing)

Singing in the Car

When I was young, my mom used to play 80’s music in the car for me. Songs that I remember hearing range from “Bette Davis Eyes” by Kim Carnes to “When You Were Mine” by Prince. I remember singing along in the car with my mom when I was very young. The conversation that we had in class today about me not understanding the lyrics to “Bette Davis Eyes” when I was little made me think about all of the other songs that I used to listen to that I never full understood the lyrics to. I remember singing “Greased Lightning” from Grease and singing all the dirty and mature innuendos that a child of my age shouldn’t have been singing!

I went to see Rock of Ages the other night at Fisher Auditorium with my mom and we were laughing the entire time because of all the sex jokes that were in the show. We were laughing even harder at a mom that was sitting in front of us who had two little girls who looked 4 and 7 years old. The show was filled with dirty jokes, allusions to sex and a ton of swear words. Every time something dirty would happen, the mom would shield her daughter’s eyes or try to cover her ears so she wouldn’t be exposed to it!

The experience reminded me of when I was that young and was exposed to that nature of comedy and music. I think I grew up completely fine even though I was singing all the words to a song that was about a woman who would seduce and sleep with many men!

I figured that I would add my favorite song to this blog post! You’re welcome, Dr. Baumer!!

Maren Morris

Lately, I have found enjoyment out of more music that I wouldn’t usually like. For example, I found this song called “Rich” by Maren Morris and by first listen I was really into it. And then I listened to it again and realized it was country!!! I usually hate country, but this song slaps. Then, I found more of her music and I found out how much of a versatile artist she really is. Her main focus, I think, is country pop, but she was also the singer on the popular song “The Middle” by Zedd & Grey. For a Everything-But-Country kind of person, I really enjoy her music and I’ve started to open up to more kinds of music that I never would’ve thought that I would enjoy.

Intimate Lyrics

I have always loved songs that have intimate lyrics that I can relate to on a real level. Any lovey pop song can have lyrics that you can relate to on a surface level like the lyrics from a Beatles or Taylor Swift song. Recently, I have been relating to the lyrics of most of Billie Eilish’s music. But, one song that I have heard in class really resonated with me. When I heard it, I started to get teary eyed because of how beautiful I thought the lyrics were. This song is “All I Want” by Joni Mitchell. Although I have heard some of Joni Mitchell’s music before, I haven’t heard this song, and when I did it gave me chills. The things that she sings about relates to me on a level that I can’t even describe. It’s like she takes the thoughts out of my head whenever I’m feeling in love. It shows the real, raw feelings you get when you are so invested in someone that you love dearly. Ever since that class, I’ve had the song on repeat. Thanks, Dr. Baumer!

Song Presentation: Me and Bobby McGee by Janis Joplin

[Verse 1]

Busted flat in Baton Rouge, waiting for a train

When I was feeling nearly faded as my jeans

Bobby thumbed a diesel down, just before it rained

And rode us all the way to New Orleans

I pulled my harpoon out of my dirty red bandana

I was playing soft while Bobby sung the blues, yeah

Windshield wipers slapping time I was holding Bobby’s hand in mine

We sang every song that driver knew

[Chorus]

Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose

Nothing, I mean nothing, honey if it ain’t free, no no

Yeah feeling good was easy Lord, when he sang the blues

You know feeling good was good enough for me

Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

[Verse 2]

From the Kentucky coal mines to the California sun

Yeah, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul

Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done

Yeah, Bobby baby kept me from the cold

One day up near Salinas, Lord, I let him slip away

He’s lookin’ for that home, and I hope he finds it

But I’d trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday

To be holdin’ Bobby’s body next to mine

[Chorus]

Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose

Nothing, and that’s all that Bobby left me

Feeling good was easy Lord, when he sang the blues

You know feeling good was good enough for me

Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee

[Bridge]

La da la la la, la da la la la da la

La da da la la la Bobby McGee yeah x3

[Outro]

Lord, I called him my lover, I called him my man

I said called him my lover just the best I can and come on

And and a Bobby oh, and a Bobby McGee yeah

Lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo lo; Hey hey hey Bobby McGee, lord

La da la la la, la da la la la la la

Hey hey hey, Bobby McGee yeah

Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby”

I had my music on shuffle the other day and one of my favorite songs came on. It was “Cry Baby” by Janis Joplin. I have loved Janis since I was in middle school and finding new music that the other kids around me weren’t listening to. I was always captivated by the way she sings this song. It has something a little different than the rest of her songs. Although all of her songs have soul and feeling within her words and voice, this song in particular always gets me in my feelings because of the pain I can feel in her voice when she sings. It is a cover that she did of a song by Garnet Mimms and the Enchanters, a blues artist and band from the 1960’s. The song is about someone who was completely in love with another someone who had left them for their old flame. Basically, the lyrics are saying, “Go ahead and let yourself get screwed over with them, I want to see you cry like a little baby when you want to come back to me.” Knowing the type of person Janis was, this seems like it hit really close to home for her with one of her past loves. I wonder if she still felt that pain every time she recorded or performed that song? Listen for yourself and see if you can feel her pain, too.

Ariana Grande’s Thank U, Next

This week, Ariana Grande has dropped another album titled after one of her popular singles Thank U ,Next.  Being a fan of Ariana since a young age, I believe that she has entered into a new chapter of her life and it is shown through her music style and lyrics. She has become a pinnacle of feminine power in the music industry and I think that is very admirable for young girls and women everywhere. Her lyrics show how it is okay to use your sexuality to express yourself and not be degraded for it. In our society today, this kind of message needs to be heard by so many of us women. As a woman who has been through hell and back within the past year and a half, Ariana has definitely rose from the ashes and is simultaneously changing how we, as women, view ourselves and the patriarchal world around us. Ariana is a beacon of feminism and I will not be surprised if she goes down in history as one of our most influential artists of our time.

If you haven’t checked out Ariana’s new album yet, I suggest that you do. The messages behind her lyrics tell a great story of all that she’s been through. Not to mention that most of her songs are complete bops. Highly recommended.

How Music Evolved

I have recently found a very cool website that I think a lot of people would enjoy. It is an ongoing interactive chart of Billboards Top 100 Songs since 1958. I had spent hours just sitting and listening to how each new wave of music was popular for a certain number of years until a new sound came through. It was very interesting to see how the styles of music in each decade melted into each other slightly when they are heard evolving together. I find it fascinating how we wouldn’t have the music of the 90’s if it weren’t for the music of the 80’s. When you compare music from the 70’s to the 90’s, it’s like a whole different world without the transition in the 80’s. I think it’s amazing how music has morphed over the decades into what we listen to now. I wonder what our popular music will sound like in 10 more years? Or maybe 20?

Here’s a link to the website; check it out!
