Adding the history of pop music to education

With our first test in the class History of popular music down, I have been thinking about just how little I really did know about the history of popular music. Just like anyone I listen to the pop music on the radio occasionally but did I know the difference between rock n roll and R&B… no not really. When I was studying the over the weekend and last night there were still things I realized I had just learned because of this class or didn’t know and learned while studying. I was thinking also about just how helpful this class will be for me as a music educator as well. So many times I think we as teachers try to show our students the “classics” in music repertoire but sometimes the history of popular music itself is a form of the classics. Though its no Beethoven or Mozart, Frank Sinatra did make his own mark on music and it has impacted our history. I think the more I can take in in this class and learn the better I will be able to reach my future students. Some students especially in a general music class may not be as thrilled to hear Mozart but though he has his place and I think everyone should know about it sometimes I think being able to teach something like the history of popular music especially in a general music class may be a netter way to go. With the first in our class down going forward I am hoping i did well on the exam which I think I did fairly well and I am looking forward to learning more as this is not a class like any music history class I have taken before. Heres to week 5!
