Good evening hope you are all having a wonderful day! Today I had a relaxing day at home and made some vegan chili which turned out amazing! A topic that I would like to discuss today is Global Media and Communications.
Global media / communications are having an understanding of how the world works in terms of media and communication outside of the United States. Many countries have different cultures, values and ways they distribute and view their media. It can be quite a culture shock when you compare the way things operate here in the US than how they operate in a place such as Iceland. I was first exposed to learning about global media and culture through a class at IUP called “Global Media and Culture,” which was instructed by Dr. Muchtar. It was a very eye-opening class as it exposed me to how the world works in so many other ways than what I thought to be possible. This class allowed me to see the other perspectives that so many individuals in life have.
The main theme / obstacle when it comes to Global Media and communications is understanding that outside of the US, things can be very different from what we are used to here. Many places receive / view media in different ways, have tighter control on their internet and censorship and have a completely different culture. For example, China, Cuba and Vietnam are countries that govern control over what people are allowed to have access to and view but places such as the US or Canada are more lenient with these policies. I was surprised to find also how many countries are lacking in forms of media, communication and technology especially in many 3rd world countries. Many of these 3rd world countries do not have the type of accessible technology like we have in the US; often times living in small villages where the inhabitants sadly suffer from famine, disease and poverty.
The main solution to understanding global communication and different cultures is the concept of globalization; which is understanding the way that other countries operate in ways including media, communications, culture, economics politics and many other components at the same time trying to connect with / have a relationship with other countries other than your own. Globalization is not a new concept and has been around for quite some time, it is the idea of the world being one connected place essentially. Without the advancements made to technology / media in the past few centuries, our world would be extremely divided compared to how it is in 2020. Having a basic understanding of global media, communications and globalization as a whole can be extremely beneficial in many ways to help you be inclusive of others and the world they live in, your career and just to be better educated on what is going on outside of your country.
Why do you think it is important to have an understanding of global media and communications? Do you think globalization will help us be an even more connected / understanding world 20 years from now? Please let me know your opinions, I would love to hear what you have to say!
Have a great rest of your night,
