As if glass collecting wasn’t hard enough, the greatest challenge still lies ahead. It seems like every set has one. That glass that’s more valuable than the rest, that one that we all need to finally complete our collection, that one . . . that’s the hardest to find. That’s right. There’s always that one that’s so elusive no one can seem to find it no matter how hard we look. The one that makes us question if it even exists. The answer is yes, it does exist. And there lies the rub.
Those glasses are given the description “hard to find” for a reason. The main force that drives this into becoming an obstacle is that few were made, plus throw in the factor that some were broken through the years. However, the rarity of them is what makes them more valuable than the other glasses in the set. It’s what also makes them desirable to other collectors.
There is only one solution here: buy them whenever the chance arises. However, there are some things that should be taken into consideration. First, research what the glass is valued at, so not to accidentally overpay for the glass. Paying just a little over the value price wouldn’t hurt since the price will probably only go up, that’s a decision each person will have to make. But make sure to set your price beforehand. Second, look for it everywhere, whether it’s flea markets, antique shops, or even online. Online is going to be the best bet though, as almost anything can be found on the Internet. Third, have patience when looking for it, as the name suggests, it will be ‘hard to find’ or it will have a hefty price tag.
From my collection, Slow Poke Rodriguez was the hardest to find.
What I suggest will probably be what’s already on everybody’s minds. That is to buy the glass as low as you can while knowing it will be priced higher than the others. I mean who doesn’t want to get anything at a bargain price? However, for me to complete my collection, I paid full price (but not over) for my Looney Tunes Slow Poke Rodriguez glass. I found it on eBay along with a Henery Hawk glass, which was the full price as well. At least I can say I didn’t overpay. Being an avid collector, I still check out eBay to see if there are any I can get cheaper. The hunt was long for me, as it probably will be for everyone. Just have patience and it will reveal itself someday.
