Agate Publishing, an Evanston-based company that runs the Surrey, Bolden, B2, and Midway Books imprints, as well as the Agate Development educational content development service, is seeking interns for its six-month training internship program. Candidates must make a minimum weekly commitment of 30 hours per week for a six-month period, running either January-June or July-December. Agate only considers candidates who have completed at least their junior year of undergraduate studies.
Interns are given extensive training in all facets of the book publishing process, with an eye toward preparing them for a wide range of entry-level job opportunities. Agate has an excellent record in helping interns find publishing industry jobs.
Agate seeks interns to fill two different roles, and all interns are trained to perform a wide variety of fundamental publishing and small business tasks.
- Publishing interns: produce catalog and press materials and mass mailings; review and inventory manuscript submissions; communicate via phone and email with media organizations around the country; compile and organize media contact information; produce social media postings; write and post website information.
- Editorial interns: proofread books and marketing materials; research, outline, and edit content for ebooks; copyedit and style manuscripts; perform fact-checking and research tasks; copyedit and review educational content; review manuscript submissions.
Length of Internship
Internship periods are January 1-June 30 and July 1-December 31 each year
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree preferred; candidates must have completed at least their junior year of undergraduate studies. Strong reading, writing, and personal communication skills are essential, as is a solid grasp of English grammar and style; previous experience in manuscript editing and/or familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style is very welcome. Solid organizational skills and computer skills are also desired. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, InDesign) is a bonus but not required.
