Description

Akashic Books is looking for unpaid, part-time editorial interns to work in our dynamic Brooklyn office. Interns work 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for either two or three days each week (M-F). Ideal candidates are self-starters who can work independently and collaboratively; have excellent writing, research, and communication skills; are creative thinkers; and have a strong interest in contemporary literature.

We don’t have formal “departments” at Akashic, so our interns have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of tasks—ranging from editorial to production to administrative (and everywhere in between)—over the course of a season. Given the nature of independent publishing, a significant portion of the internship is spent dealing with the nuts-and-bolts nitty-gritty details and administrative aspects of running a small business. For example, all interns are expected to prepare and fulfill mailings each day they are in the office. That said, we do try to tailor the internship as best we can to our interns’ strengths and interests:

EDITORIAL INTERNSHIP: Primary editorial intern responsibilities include reading and evaluating manuscripts for potential publication; inputting copyedits using Adobe InDesign; conducting research to build our various databases; fulfilling all mailings and Internet orders; writing original content for our website; e-book/production work as needed; and general office tasks. Note that the editorial intern will not work exclusively on editorial tasks, but the internship will be weighted toward this type of work.

Requirements

  • Solid writing and research skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects under tight deadlines in a fast-paced and collaborative small office environment

To Apply

Please send a resume and brief cover letter outlining your interest in our internship program to ibrahim@akashicbooks.com.

MPORTANT: when applying, please indicate which season you’d like to be considered for, and which specific weekdays you can commit to working from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

For applicants outside of the NYC metro area, please indicate whether or not you have housing in place for the appropriate season. (Akashic is unable to help in this regard, and will prioritize applicants who have already made housing arrangements.)
