COMM Internship FAQ

What is an internship?

It is a course in the Bachelors of Science Communications Media program called COMM 493. It is worth 9 credits. It requires a student to complete a summer (and only a summer) work experience with an organization that is affiliated with IUP. The student must complete 360 hours of supervised work that meets objectives agreed upon by the student, the internship site, and the Communications Media program at IUP.

Is the internship required to graduate with a B.S. degree in Communications Media?

Yes. There are no exceptions.

What is an affiliated internship site?

An affiliated internship site is an organization that has a signed affiliation agreement with IUP. It states that IUP will provide an instructor to academically supervise the internship and provide academic credit for the work. It states that the internship site will provide professional level experience under the on-site supervision of site employee who has the training, title, and or experience sought by the intern.

What is an affiliation agreement?

Who sends the affiliation agreement to the internship site?

The Department Internship Coordinator sends the affiliation agreement to the site. Students may not send the affiliation agreement to a site under any circumstances. Students never see the affiliation agreement. The agreement is returned to the Department Internship Coordinator who submits it to IUP for processing and approval.

Contact your department internship coordinator.

What is an internship contract?

An internship contract is a document that is filled out by the intern and signed by the intern and the internship site supervisor.

When do I complete the internship contract?

Follow the checklist given to you in COMM 395 and on this site.

What are the important dates for the internship program?

Please see the calendar on this site.

What are the prerequisites for the COMM internship program?

Junior or senior standing. At least 25 credits of COMM courses completed. COMM 395: Career Planning is a prerequisite that will not be waived for any reason.

Why is the internship program only offered in the summer?

Faculty must be assigned to academically supervise internships. The Communications Media department at IUP sends out between 100 and 150 interns each year. The department does not have enough faculty to teach courses in the the fall and spring and supervise interns. Therefore, the internship program is only offered in the summer. There are no exceptions to this rule!

Why wasn’t I told about the summer internship requirement when I started at IUP?

You were. At the beginning of their program at IUP, all students receive an undergraduate catalog that clearly states that the internship is only offered in the summer and is required for graduation.

Do I have to pay tuition for internships on the IUP campus?

Yes. You pay tuition for the nine credit course, COMM 493, no matter what organization hosts the internship, including IUP. The one exception is The Washington Center. PASSHE currently offers a scholarship that covers the tuition cost and makes The Washington Center internship program no more expensive than any other internship.

What do I do if my family is taking an vacation during the internship?

Tell your family to have a good time and that you’ll miss them. No one asks for vacation in the first three months of a job! Do not embarrass yourself by asking for this perk!
