For today, I had to finish writing letters to the guests, donors, and sponsors who attended the Vintage Affair event. I then spent my day making sure that each letter was accompanied by an official tax deductible sheet from Lifesteps. I had to calculate how many tickets each person purchased for the event. Lifesteps has a specific dollar amount they take out per person, per ticket, for each event. For Vintage affair, $15 is taken out for each person’s donation they give. Each person’s total amount of dollars deducted was different depending on how many tickets they purchased.

Today, I learned that Lifesteps is specifically under the non-profit 501(c)3 code. The 501 code exempts Lifesteps from being taxed by the federal government. I also learned that employees working for a non-profit for over 10 years can qualify for loan forgiveness from the government.

Over the past two days, I’ve continued to improve the skills I learned in my MS program. I was taught how to write in ways that persuade an audience to respond favorably to the message being sent. The letters I’ve been writing to guests have portrayed this concept in that they inform them of the outcome of an event they participated in. I also thank them for their participation and remind them of the programs that Lifesteps offers and how by their donation, even in a little way, these programs are still functioning. I think ending the letter by thanking them for their time and donation and also expressing our desire to see them again builds in them a feeling of being needed.

Next week, I’ll have a meeting with Cassandra about more projects for me to work on during my internship.
